My intention with these was to create a background to insert into photoshop.

Initial esponse to Elina Brotherus

I decided to respond to Elina Brotherus' work of figures in dramatic landscapes. Instead of usuing dramatic landscapes as these are hard to come by in London, I decided to use a familiar landscape to the models, as my work is about the relationship between them and thier environment. Her images have a sense of stillness that i wanted to replicate in my own images.

 

I also wanted to contrast and so responded to Jaques Henri Lartigues images on beaches which, differently to Brotherus' work, show extreme emotion and expression in the positioning of the subjects. I think its interesting how much this change alters the whole photograph

Ruud van Empel

I had at first intended to look at the feature length documentary based on Ruud Van Empels work but I found it extremely difficult to find a hard or digital copy. Instead i looked on youtube for some information on his work and found this 10 minute film about his 2011 exhibition, including interviews with him and other artists view of the work. This was insightful as it shows his reasoning behind his work, a bit about his process of using photoshop and why he creates work in this way.

Fumi Nagasaka

Nagasaka's influences are music and Nan Goldin. Describes her work as “candid, contemplative and wholly spontaneous'. i specifically like the bottom image here showing a "pre-teen" and could respond to this as i think this is an interesting age for style and personality changing. I also like the image above of the girl near the popcorn stand, the composition is interesting as she is the focus but there is much more going on. The colours also contrast with her expression as they are bold and bright but she appears solemn in her emotion.I also think the use of location in relation to the model is interesting and something i would like to explore.

Giesermann André and Daniel Schulz : The Morning After

This project by Hamburg students Andre and Schulz was really interesting to me firstly due to the obvious subject matter as my extended project piece is based around club culture, but then I saw how it also analysed the spaces themselves as opposed to what goes on inside them. The images show an eerie silence and stillness in the spaces, a contrast to what would, at a different time of day, be full of movement and sound.

'Streets of...7cities in 7 minutes' Installation Opening

The installation by Alda Terracciano is essentially seven videos, each of a different city around the world, lasting 7 minutes. The installation was shown in the Greenwich Peninsula area, in a previous dumping area turned picturesque garden. Each video was shown in a seperate shed around the garden, containing smells and tastes typical of the city shown. This gave the videos an interactive feel almost like the viewer is travelling to these places themselves. The cities were chosen to "uncover the ancestral memory of three historical, intersecting journeys (the Indo-European migrations, the Silk Road, and the Transatlantic Slave Trade)" as they continue to affect peoples lives around the world. I liked the videos as they seemed to focus on the normal people of the cities rather than the general stereotypes or preconceptions, this gave it an anthropological element as it allowed you to get a real feel for the city.
